Choose a Web Host
How to Choose a Web Host
Web hosting is a big business on the internet nowadays...so big, in fact, that it can be difficult to choose from amongst the myriad of options.
How do you know you're going to get reliable service and customer support at reasonable prices? And how do you compare what one company offers versus another?
A web hosting review site can help you sift through the multiple options by showing you the good, the bad and the ugly of web hosts. A good review site like Hosting-Review basically does the homework for you - you can compare prices and packages easily in one place, as well as read detailed information about various web hosts, as written by webmasters who have both user experience and customer feedback on the different hosting companies.
Still not sure what to do? Let's go through some of the different criteria you should consider when evaluating the best web host for your needs:
Space & Bandwidth
Your needs for space and bandwidth will depend on how large and/or graphics-heavy your site is, as well as your expected volume of traffic. Most plans typically offer at least 50 MB. However, make sure that you are not going to get charged extra for features such as mail, system programs, and other elements of your web site as these may or may not be included in disk space limit provided. The same goes for bandwidth - 500 MB is typical for many average-sized sites, but you may need more or substantially less.
Price
How much does the hosting package cost? (remember, the lowest price is not necessarily the way to go here). Is payment monthly or annual? Is a contract required? Some hosting companies offer substantial discounts when you sign up for a multi-year contract. What price implications are there if you go over your bandwidth limit? Read the fine print!
Scalability
If you run out of space or use up all your bandwidth and need to upgrade to a more robust package, what are the implications? Are you able to upgrade packages easily if required?
Technical Support
What types of help are offered, what are support hours, and is support free? You'd be surprised - web hosts range from offering virtually no support all the way up to free phone, fax, email and chat support 24 hours, 7 days a week. Also, beware that some hosts charge for certain types of support. This is more info you'll get from those hosting reviews.
Domain Registration
Does the web host supply domain registration services or must you register your domain yourself? How portable is your domain name? You will want to be able to take it with you if you ever change hosting providers.
Additional Services
What additional services are offered with your package? This can include free scripts, web traffic statistics tools, shopping carts, design help, and many other features and functions. Many of these can be very useful and are worth checking out. On the flip side, try not to pay for what you won't use.
Speed & Uptime
Above all, you want a reliable site that does not bog down or go down. It is a nightmare to have visitors leave your site because it is not working or it is so slow that they lose interest. A good web host will have an uptime guarantee and will notify you of any scheduled downtime.
Email Addresses
Ensure that your chosen web host package gives you enough email addresses for your needs. Remember, too, that if you're a one-man show, it can’t hurt to have multiple email addresses (eg. sales@mysite.com, customerservice@mysite.com, etc) - even if they all go to your inbox, you look like a bigger company, which can add to your credibility.
Choosing that hosting company can be time-consuming and complicated, so use hosting reviews to your advantage - after all, these are webmasters who have used different hosts themselves!
All Dedicated Hosting
Unless overtly listed otherwise, most web hosting packages you’ll come across in your search are called shared hosting providers - not dedicated hosting providers. What this means is that the server or servers that host your website are simultaneously hosting numerous other websites also. This gives you a discounted rate on web hosting services in exchange for tolerating certain technical constraints, like bandwidth, disk space, upload and download speeds, security and privacy, traffic, and probably the most notable restriction -- total control.
If you want total control not only over the administration of your website but also over the very hardware and software used to run it, then you should be evaluating not shared hosting providers, but dedicated hosting providers. If your business is large enough or growing fast enough that it requires its own internet connection and server, you may need a dedicated hosting provider or dedicated servers.
What’s the downside to going with dedicated hosting providers? In a word: responsibility. In most areas of life, with total control comes total responsibility, and it’s no different with dedicated hosting providers. With dedicated servers, the onus is on you to buy, install, and maintain the actual equipment - the dedicated servers - mounted in the dedicated hosting provider's data center.
Fortunately, you still get the benefit of the dedicated hosting provider's presumably top-notch, around-the-clock security over the dedicated servers physical premises, but you remain fully responsible for the security of your cyber-premises. Likewise, dedicated hosting providers will ensure that the dedicated servers in the building are all provided with redundant uninterruptible and backup power and environmental controls, but it’s you who must keep your machines and cables maintained and functioning in this idyll environment.
How do you identify whether it’s time to switch from a shared hosting provider to a dedicated hosting provider? There are three main indicators:
Speed
If the traffic streaming through your shared server is slowing down your customers’ pace as they browse your site (or your employees, if an in-house site), it may simply be time to look for more unencumbered shared hosting. But if you’ve tried several shared hosting providers with the same results, then it may be time to remind yourself how impatient the average web surfer is and consider dedicated severs or a dedicated hosting provider. While you’re jumping from shared host to shared host trying to save a buck, your customers are jumping ship. Your ability to respond promptly and effectively to customer transactions and inquiries cannot be overemphasized either.
Reliability
The limits to your control are nowhere more apparent than in the areas of reliability and security. It’s not simply that problems can arise: problems do arise. It’s the nature of the biz. And if you don’t have unlimited access to your own operating system as with dedicated hosting, dedicated servers, software and database apps, etc., there’s not much you can do when one arises.
Customizability
If your company is growing fast, you’re going to be changing many aspects of your web presence along with it. You may regularly need to tweak your disk space and bandwidth and experiment with using different applications to better serve your changing needs. On a shared host, upgrading in such a way usually involves leaping from one "package" or "plan" to another. These packages are generally preset and may or may not serve your immediate needs. They may be riddled with programs you don’t yet need, for example, yet lack in the one singular program you do. Or the next leap up from your current plan has way more disk space and bandwidth than you need at the moment. With dedicated servers and a dedicated hosting package, you can make changes incrementally, step forward, step back, heck, step sideways if you need to and when you need to.
In large part, it’s the size and growth rate of your business that will dictate whether you need a shared or a dedicated hosting provider. Affordability and personal time commitment are nice secondary considerations, but if your business is booming, you would do it a great injustice to try and save on a few bucks and few extra hours per week of your time in exchange for slower and poorer quality of service for your customers.
By the same token, however, if your business is small enough to function quite smoothly on any of the shared hosting providers out there, don’t squander your precious capital on a dedicated hosting package just so you can have total control. Sometimes total control isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
How to Evaluate a Web Host
Choosing a host for your web-site is no small decision. Once committed to one, it will become very difficult to move your business elsewhere – not to mention the damage that can be done to your business if you make the wrong choice. This makes it very important to “get it right the first time”. Find out as much as you can about your prospective host before making any decisions.
When evaluating your host, you will obviously be considering price. But price is, of course, not the only important factor. You will also need to take into consideration:
1. the speed and reliability of the servers and hardware
2. the features the host offers and whether these mesh with your own requirements, and, of course
3. the quality of their support services.
Let’s look at each of these in turn:
1. Speed and Reliability of the Servers and Hardware
The speed and reliability of your host’s servers will depend on several factors, including the quality of their connection to the internet, bandwidth, and the availability of back-up systems in case things go wrong. Here’s a checklist of points to consider when checking out your prospective host’s servers and hardware:
* A T3 Connection (or better), close to a primary internet backbone.
A T3 connection is approx 30 times as fast as a T1 connection. Smaller hosting providers – for example, the proverbial "garage operations" --- will often use T1 connections, with no backup at all. They may be very cheap – but, be careful here, you can get what you pay for!
* Effective Bandwidth Management
In addition to having a fast connection to the internet, your host should be able to manage how its available bandwidth is used . As a guide, it should typically not be using more than 50 percent of its bandwidth.
* Backup Systems
If there is a systems, network or power failure, the last thing you want is to lose your data or to have your web-site go down for a long period. Good hosts will have back up systems in place to guard against this.
Look for a host who can provide:
* Regular, daily back up of your data
* Backup power supplies
Look for an uninterruptible power supply system (often referred to as "UPS") - a back up power generator available in case of emergencies.
* Redundancy
Do they have more than one connection to the internet, in case one of their connections goes down.
* An “Uptime” Guarantee
These typically state "We guarantee 99% (or 99.5%) uptime".
Here’s a sample of the kind of information that the web host should be supplying - this one taken from the web-host Interliant ( http://webhosting.interliant.com ) :
"Our Internet connectivity is supplied by three separate diverse backbone providers: UUNET, SAAVIS and Goodnet. If one of these lines goes down, traffic is automatically routed through the lines that are still online. Our data center is supplied by multiple redundant power sources - centralized automatic UPS system with a battery-powered backup system. The batteries are also connected to three diesel power generators in the event of a power outage to the building."
2. Features
As well as checking out the reliability of the servers and hardware you will also need to evaluate and compare the features provided by your host.
A full range of hosting features can be viewed on Webhostdir.com’s “advanced search”, which compares hosting providers on both price and features. This is an excellent facility for comparing features when choosing a host - but to make the best use of it, you will need first to prepare a list of features you require.
Here’s a checklist of things to consider:
* Shared or Dedicated Server?
Depending on your requirements, you may be better off with a dedicated server than a shared server. Dedicated servers are typically used in cases where there is a high level of traffic, there is a strong need for security, or the user wishes to run their own customised software and applications rather than the standard ones supplied by the host.
For more information on available dedicated server providers, check out Webhostdir’s “dedicated server” search page.
* Compatibility with Existing Software and Skills
Is your host’s server, software and support services compatible will the skills and software that you (or your design team) are using? If, for instance, you are used to working in a Unix environment, then it probably makes little sense to choose an NT host.
* Flexibility and Room for Growth
You do not need a database solution now, perhaps, but you may need one in the future. Similarly, a shared hosting arrangement may be fine for you now, but what if your traffic levels explode, and you need one in a years’ time? It is much easier to remain with one host than to change. So, when choosing a host, keep in mind your possible future needs, and whether the host will be able to accommodate them.
3. Support and Service
Once you have checked out the reliability of the servers and hardware, and located a host that provides the features you want, the final task is to evaluate the quality of their support services.
Most hosts now promise 24/7 support as a standard feature -- but, do they really live up to that promise? It will be a good idea to find out before committing to them! Here’s a checklist of things to consider before making that all-important decision
* Quality of existing customers
What is the quality and calibre of the sites currently served by this host? If they generally host high-calibre commercial clients, then, if you are running a commercial web-site, they may be a better bet for you than if they mainly host, for instance, or small businesses with 2 or 3 page static web-sites. (There may, of course, be cost trade-off here.)
* Opinions of existing customers
A host may boast of its popularity, the fact that it hosts lots of web-sites. However, the most “popular” are not necessarily the best -- they may just be the ones with the largest advertising budget!
Indeed “popularity” can be a double-edged sword -- support resources may more thinly spread, and bandwidth may be squeezed as a result of the numbers hosted.
So don’t go on numbers alone. Get in touch with some of the host's existing (or past) customers, and ask them what they really think of the service and reliability of their host.
* Stability
The last thing you want is for your host to go out of business. So try to get some idea of how stable they are. Number of years in business is sometimes (not always, of course) a good indicator.
* Support and Responsiveness
Try asking the support staff a few technical questions of the type you anticipate you will be asking when you host with them. Then monitor how quickly and efficiently they respond.

Anti-Scholarship to Entrepreneurs Awarded By Waking Girl Web Design
Third annual winner of the WG Anti-Scholarship to be selected by Waking Girl Web Design, for students going directly into the business world from high school.
The prize money, $500, is to be used for special training, tools or supplies to start a business. Winner to be announced at wakinggirl.com and Perham High School, Perham, Minnesota.
Waking Girl Web Design was started by Angela Refsland, a 4.0 GPA student who dropped out of Perham High School her senior year in order to attend college early. She quickly saw that academia does little to prepare people for the business world. Refsland left college and started a web design business. She trained herself in web design since the age of 12, by reading web tutorials and using trial and error.
Refsland selects students, not based on grade point average, but on their entrepreneurial goals. She also looks for students who can stretch $500 to actually start a business. The 2008 winner used the prize money to buy tools for an auto mechanics class; his plan is to start an auto body shop. The 2007 winner used the prize money to buy a computer to start an online business that caters to students.
Refsland explains why she started the contest, "I want to change the way we educate students. Our current education system isn't working. The anti-scholarship is my attempt at encouraging skills that are truly valuable to the world, rather than praising students for being good at filling out forms and waiting in lines." She claims that despite her high grade point average, she was unprepared for the real world.
The application deadline for the 2009 contest has passed. For information on this year's winner contact Angela Refsland or visit: www.wakinggirl.com.

Update on the .INFO Domain Released By Afilias
A global provider of internet infrastructure services, Afilias, has released a report highlighting the growth of the .INFO domain and its new developments.
With changes expected for the domain industry in coming year as new top-level domains are introduced, .INFO's success story allows for reflection on the building of a strong and stable domain with staying power.
"Building a new TLD is hard, long-term work and many elements need to be in place for it to be successful," said Roland LaPlante, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Afilias "This report reveals that over the past eight years, .INFO has proven itself to be not just a globally intuitive path to information on the Net, but an enduring one as well."
.INFO now has over 5 million registrations and is approaching 4 million active Web sites. The top regions for registrations are North America (56 percent) and Europe (34 percent). The report also reveals that .INFO owners are finding genuine value in the domain, as more owners are renewing their names each year. .INFO sites are also attracting many visitors, as shown by the 13,000 .INFOs that are ranked in ALEXA's most trafficked sites list.
In addition to statistics on the health of .INFO, the report provides an update on important initiatives undertaken in .INFO over the last year--especially in the security area. Of particular note is .INFO's successful campaign to curb illegal domain use that has resulted in .INFO being among the "least-phished-in" large domains. This campaign combined rigorous monitoring and enforcement with a pioneering new Anti-Abuse Policy and serves as a model for other domains.
The full report is available at: www.info.info/webfm_send/70
About .INFO
.INFO was the first generic, unrestricted TLD to be launched since .com. Registrations in .INFO first became available in 2001. Since then, .INFO has grown to become the fourth largest gTLD in the world. Domains are currently available in ten Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) scripts. Climate-Positive Web Hosting Goals For 2008

Climate-Positive Web Hosting Goals For 2008 Has Been Met By ServInt
A pioneering provider of high-reliability web hosting for businesses worldwide, ServInt, have announced it successfully met its climate-positive web hosting goals for 2008.
In June 2008, the company launched its Green Initiative, deploying multiple green methodologies to help customers operate with minimal environmental impact.
For 2008, ServInt met the goals of its Green Initiative via the following programs:
• ServInt offset the total carbon footprint of its entire line of Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting solutions, including its SuperVPS service, by at least 110 percent. This was accomplished through a large-scale reforestation campaign operated by American Forests (www.americanforests.org). To ensure a truly climate-positive approach, ServInt calculates its reforestation commitment not only on the energy consumption of the host servers, but on its entire VPS infrastructure.
• ServInt recycled all recyclable components and exceeded environmental standards for the disposal of all non-recyclable hazardous components.
• ServInt made exclusive use of Dell low-voltage server hardware for two of its most popular hosting services, SuperVPS and UltimateVPS. This helped to ensure low per-capita energy consumption through efficient virtualization. The Dell hardware provides high-performance, while operating with a much smaller carbon footprint. Both SuperVPS and UltimateVPS are powerful replacements for the traditional dedicated server. They offer customers increased redundancy while providing the same computing performance of a traditional dedicated server, with significant cost savings.
ServInt's Green Initiative has helped its customers realize that, besides harming the environment, energy-inefficient computing can adversely affect their company’s financial health and lead to serious competitive disadvantages. ServInt's method of virtualization improves energy efficiency via the decommissioning of unnecessary physical servers and higher utilization of the remaining, more energy-efficient servers.
ServInt Founder and CEO Reed Caldwell said the Company is committed to the concepts of Lean Manufacturing by running the least-wasteful organization possible.
"In 2008, we helped ourselves, our customers and the planet by utilizing efficient servers, recycling our components and investing in carbon-offset projects." Caldwell said. "This year, we will continue our commitment to these green measures and go even further by exploring new ways of decreasing waste and increasing efficiency."
Those interested in learning more about ServInt's Green Initiative can call 1-800-573-7846 or visit www.servint.net/servintgreeninitiative.php.

A virtual private server (VPS, also referred to as Virtual Dedicated Server or VDS) is a method of partitioning a physical server computer into multiple servers such that each has the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine.
A dedicated server or managed server is a type of Internet hosting where the client leases an entire un-partitioned server. This is offers a more scalable and flexible solution, than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over their servers, including choice of operating system, hardware.
4 ssl and how to use what ssl answer here
Standard SSL directory is an internet based directory that provides a listing of websites that are secured by Standard SSL certificates. Such a directory is very useful for website owners of small businesses and e-commerce websites that don’t have big budgets yet need directory listing for promoting their business and website.
Almost all of us know about yellow pages and how they are useful for businesses. Listing of businesses in yellow pages helps businesses reach a wider number of people. Similarly the listings allow customers and consumers to find the business or service provider they need from a wide selection without having to run about searching.
An SSL directory works on the same principle and provides listings of e-commerce websites that are certified by SSL certificates. In other words, it provides a listing of e-businesses that are known to be secure and trustworthy.
SSL Certificates come in various types – standard certificates that are used to secure small or stand-alone e-commerce websites, enterprise certificates that help secure websites of major enterprises or businesses that involve high volume transactions are some examples.
Similarly enterprise SSL directories are also of different types. A Standard SSL directory is usually a listing of websites that are secured by a standard SSL certificate. Examples of standard SSL certificates would be the RapidSSL® and RapidSSL® WildCard certificates. Websites that are secured by Standard SSL certificates are normally privately owned, small e-commerce websites.
These websites don’t have high volume transactions and cater to a limited number of customers and visitors each day. A Standard SSL directory would normally list such websites by classifying them on the basis of the type of Standard SSL certificate they hold. This means a Standard SSL directory would have listings classified under the following headings
How do I use SSL?
To begin using SSL, you will first need to create a new subdirectory (or folder) in your site. Into this folder you can place any pages you want to protect with SSL.
Setting Up an SSL Directory
1. Open your File Manager by clicking the "File Manager" link on the Create & Update, Manage, or Index tabs of your Web Hosting Control Panel.
2. Click the "Create Subdirectory" link near the top-right corner of your File Manager.
3. On the following page, enter the name "ssl" (all lowercase) for the new subdirectory in the "Subdirectory Name" text box.
4. Click the "Create Subdirectory" button.
5. You will return to your File Manager, where you'll see a confirmation that you have successfully created your new subdirectory.
6. Now place any web pages and forms you want to protect into the new ssl subdirectory (learn how). You'll need to include a page called index.html (or rename an existing page), which will be the first page that visitors to the secure area will see.
(Note: Be sure to adjust any links you may have already created that refer to the moved files, or your links to those pages will break.)
How It Works
You can review your newly secured pages at your domain in the SSL directory you created. The web address of the secure directory will look something like this:
http://www.widgetdesigns.com/ssl
When anyone visits your secure directory, your site will redirect them to our secure server, protecting any information submitted from those pages and changing the web address to look something like this:
https://s.p2.hostingprod.com/@widgetdesigns.com (the older version of our secure server) or
https://p12.secure.hostingprod.com/@widgetdesigns.com
The s in https is the secure version of the http protocol, which uses SSL to transport data between systems. The next part of the address (s.p2.hostingprod.com or p12.secure.hostingprod.com) represents Yahoo!'s SSL secure server.
Please note that the name of the server assigned to your domain may very. To locate the exact address of the SSL server you'll be using, visit the Manage tab of your Web Hosting Control Panel, and click the "SSL Secure Server" link. Here you'll find SSL setup instructions and server information specific to your account.
Forms
If you are setting up SSL to protect data submitted in a form, be sure to direct your form results to a secure page or script contained in your SSL directory. Look for the option to specify your "form action tags," which should look something like the example below:
